Travel apps are a great way to ease the stresses of travel. I’ve chosen a few of my favorites that I love to use while I’m on the road, and sometimes at home to make life easier. Most of these are free, so they’re easy on your wallet. If you’re like me and you’re attached to your phone, you probably have your own favorite apps. You’ve probably heard of a few of these, but hopefully I can give you a few new ones to add to your ever over-full iCloud storage.

Been

I love tracking where I’ve been. Maybe it’s because I love lists, love crossing things off of them, and just love having a visual, but I love looking at maps and seeing states or countries highlighted and remembering all of those travels. I love this app because it’s easy to use, no frills, and does exactly what you’d expect.

Booking.com

It’s no secret that booking.com is my favorite hotel booking company. I obviously love their app. It’s easy to use and has all of the perks the website has. It’s an easy way to keep all of my bookings in one place on my phone and easily pull them up while on the go.

Skyscanner

Just like the website, the app is a great way to find cheap flights. The app is an easy way to look for flights on the go and keep my flights organized.

XE Currency

This is the simplest and easiest to use currency exchange app that I’ve found. I liked that I can keep currencies saved in the app for when I’m traveling between multiple countries and see them all on one screen. It updates immediately when connected to wifi or data and, I find, is the most accurate exchange rate.

Trail Wallet

I use this app daily while traveling. It helps me keep track of what I’m spending to help me keep on budget. I can set a daily amount that I’d like to spend, or a total trip amount and it will give me a daily budget. It breaks up my spending into categories so I better look at my spending. My favorite feature is the ability to set multiple currencies. This is in the paid feature, but it’s so worth it. It’s so helpful, especially while traveling, because it’s so easy to spend more than you realize while using multiple currencies or currency different from your own.

Gate Guru

This app is helpful when navigating a new or unfamiliar airport. Not only does it help you map out your route to your gate, it gives you information about food and amenities for when you have a long layover. I like having an idea of where I’m going so quick stopovers aren’t stressful, or long layovers are made as comfortable as possible.

Google Translate

This is a given. It’s easy to use and a great way to help you communicate on your travels. My favorite part of the app is using the camera to capture written words and having them instantly translated. I used this a lot in Russia where I just could not type the Russian words into translate fast enough. I seriously don’t understand how it works. It’s amazing.

Uber

I love Uber when it comes to getting around a city. I feel it’s more convenient than a taxi, I’m able to pay with a card in the app, and I have an estimate beforehand of the cost. I also like, as a solo female traveler, that I know who is picking me up, and there’s a record on the app of where we’ve gone. Skype

Besides being able to video chat with your family at home, I love the Skype app because I can use it to call foreign phones for a small fee. If I were to try to call my family’s house phone from a foreign cell phone, I would be charged through the roof. With Skype, it’s only a few cents a minute and I can reload my account balance at any time easily. This is more for emergencies, or those times where I just can’t get ahold of someone in time.

US Public Lands

I just recently found this app but I have a feeling I will be using this a lot in the future. The app shows you the public lands near you, or near where you’re going, so you can plan to camp or visit, or whatever in that area. Nor only can you see who owns the land, but you can see the different rules and regulations. It’s great for long road trips where you’ll make plenty of camping stops, or if you want to visit a new place and check out the nature in the area.

Gas Buddy

This is another one of my new, but favorite apps. It’s great for road trips or visiting new places and trying to keep on budget for gas. You can plan ahead and check out the road to see where the best deals are. I even like using it at home. The app let’s me see what stores have the lowest price around me so I know to grab some gas when I pass by. I always hate finding a low price, filling up, and then driving a mile down the road to find an even better deal. This will keep you from overpaying unnecessarily.
